1997 A/W Yasumasa Morimura "La Source" Pleat Dress

1997 A/W Yasumasa Morimura "La Source" Pleat Dress

Rare pleated print dress by Issey Miyake for Pleats Please in collaboration with Yasumasa MorimuraĀ to launch the Guest Artist Series No.1 for his fall/winter 1996-1997 collection. This collectableĀ collab has been showcased at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, LACMA, and the RISD Museum, to name a few.

Morimura's art is based on an egocentric reimagining of iconic paintings and photographs from art history and celebrity culture, considered to be aĀ contemporary appropriation artistĀ whose work consists of inserting his face and body into portraits of artists and celebrities from history. For his collaboration with Issey Miyake, Morimura placed himself within the neoclassical world of Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres' 1856 painting, La Source. Instead of replacing the central figure with his own image, Morimura twined an inverted image of himself wrapped in red mesh around the painting's subject, a statuesque nude. The final print is a complicated layering of art historical and contemporary imagery that touches on a variety of constructs: male and female, east and west, clothed and nude. (via FIDM and artnet) Check out an overview of the Guest Artist Series here from Le Petit Archive.

This dress is an iconicĀ Pleats PleaseĀ column dress silhouette with signature pleated fabric that expands to fit with a pullover style funnel mock turtleneck opening. Mitre seamed sleeves accentuated the angular cut around the body. We would wear with a black Maison Margiela Tabi boot, geometric drop earrings, and our hair pulled back into a stick-straight pony artfully wrapped with a red mesh net. Or we might just decide to frame this piece and call it a day. Ash grey, iron grey,Ā silver grey, red, neon orange.
